Today in 2001: Derico Nwamama was beheaded. Okwudili Ndiwe, known as Derico Nwamama, was a notorious criminal who terrorized the South East between the late 90s and early 2000s. He was just 22 years old. Starting as a street urchin in Onitsha, he graduated to a pickpocket and then became a dreaded criminal. The mere mention of his name sent shivers down the spines of everyone in Igboland. Derico rose to prominence after he killed his friend Chiejina, a cold-blooded armed robber who ruled the streets of Onitsha at that time. Their friendship began during the famous Umuleri/Aguleri War, but Derico was based in Abuja and only visited the East for robbery operations. After Chiejina's death, Derico became the undisputed terror in the land. The entire Anambra State and its environs were in turmoil. The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned the tweet made by an aide of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, which alleges that the opposition is planning to overthrow the Tinubu government before 2027. While we consider this tweet as reckless and malicious, we also believe it is a lot more than that. If anything, it potentially lays the grounds for systematic clampdown on opposition leaders. In a statement issued Wednesday, just one week after the formal unveiling of the national opposition coalition in Abuja, the ADC, through its spokesperson Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, warned that such reckless and unsubstantiated claim signals a broader campaign of intimidation and repression against political opposition leaders by the Tinubu administration. The party announced plans to write the International Community, Observers and Human Rights Organizations to pay close attention to unfolding political events in the country. The full statement read: Bayo Onanuga’s twe...
Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have intercepted a large sum of undeclared foreign currency, including $420,900, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The seizure was disclosed on Tuesday at a press briefing held at the Customs House in Bompai, Kano. Dalhatu Abubakar, Comptroller of the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, said the interception followed “credible intelligence and a clearance operation by officers at the airport.” The suspect, identified as Ahmed Salisu, a passenger with a Ghanaian passport, was flagged after arriving from Saudi Arabia aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight. Upon arrival, the suspect, like other passengers, was reminded of the legal obligation to declare foreign currencies exceeding $10,000,” Abubakar said. A physical inspection of the suspect’s baggage reportedly led to the discovery of the currencies concealed in cartons of clothing. The total haul, according to customs, includes $420,900, £5,825, 3.9 mill...
