Today in 2001: Derico Nwamama was beheaded.

Image
Today in 2001: Derico Nwamama was beheaded. Okwudili Ndiwe, known as Derico Nwamama, was a notorious criminal who terrorized the South East between the late 90s and early 2000s. He was just 22 years old. Starting as a street urchin in Onitsha, he graduated to a pickpocket and then became a dreaded criminal. The mere mention of his name sent shivers down the spines of everyone in Igboland. Derico rose to prominence after he killed his friend Chiejina, a cold-blooded armed robber who ruled the streets of Onitsha at that time. Their friendship began during the famous Umuleri/Aguleri War, but Derico was based in Abuja and only visited the East for robbery operations. After Chiejina's death, Derico became the undisputed terror in the land. The entire Anambra State and its environs were in turmoil. Traders in Onitsha couldn’t display their goods in peace, and people slept with one eye open. Derico raided banks in Onitsha, carting away millions of naira. Travelers passing through the stat...

Neuroscience Says 3 Brainy Habits Will Make You More Efficient, Productive, and Focused

Image
As summer draws to a close, leaders often feel pressure to optimize their team's efficiency for the next quarter. Common approaches like shortening break times, increasing meeting productivity, or analyzing email traffic seem logical but fail to account for how the brain functions. In fact, these tactics may do more harm than good by pushing teams to work against their natural cognitive rhythms. Dr. Mithu Storoni, a Cambridge-trained neuroscientist and author of Hyperefficient: Optimize Your Brain to Transform the Way You Work, shared a more effective solution with me. Her research shows that true efficiency in today's technology-driven world comes from aligning work habits with the brain's natural rhythms. Instead of pushing through fatigue, Storoni advocates for structuring work around periods of peak cognitive performance. By doing so, leaders can unlock higher quality output, greater creativity, and a more sustainable pace for their teams. Here are three pow...

Haiti: Vote to Renew the Authorisation of the Multinational Security Support Mission

Image
Tomorrow morning (30 September), the Security Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution renewing for one year the authorisation for member states to deploy a Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission to Haiti to help re-establish security in the country and build conditions conducive to holding free and fair elections. Ecuador and the US—the co-penholders on Haiti—authored the draft text. Background Against the backdrop of rampant gang violence in the country, in October 2022 the Haitian government appealed for the immediate deployment of an “international specialised force” to temporarily reinforce the efforts of the Haitian National Police (HNP) to combat gangs. Secretary-General António Guterres endorsed the request, recommending that “[o]ne or several Member States, acting bilaterally at the invitation of and in cooperation with the Government of Haiti, could deploy, as a matter of urgency, a rapid action force” to support the HNP. In July 2023, ten months af...

“Rest in Peace”: Track & Field Community Heartbroken as 23-Year-Old Champion Athlete Passes Away Months After Graduation

Image
Shelby Daniele. That’s not a name Fresno natives would not know. Local audiences thronged the Veterans Memorial Stadium in numbers to watch a local young athlete compete and bring in accolade after accolade. Remember that blistering 23.73s across 200m—the second-best in Central Section history, historian Ron Blackwood said—to help Buchanan High School clinch the 2019 CIF State championship? Deep community roots saw her move out of Fresno the following year with dreams of pursuing a job to give back to society. Five years later, a crowd is gathered at the same stadium yet again, but this time, for a different reason… On Friday, friends, family, and countless others arrived in hundreds. Some cried, some hung their head low, and others discussed the five-time All-Big West honoree’s impact on the community. But one common theme settled within conversations and thoughts: The kind of person she was. A fellow athlete’s father, Brian, credited the school record holder in women’s in...

1. **Balanced Nutrition**: Eating a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, supports overall health. Find activities you enjoy to make it easier to stay consistent. 3. **Adequate Sleep**: Prioritizing sleep is crucial for recovery and cognitive function. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your body and mind recharge. 4. **Stress Management**: Incorporating relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
